ChatGPT is a conversational AI assistant. You can use it for writing, planning, coding, image/file analysis and other tasks. Some tools and limits depend on your plan, workspace, region and current product release. Treat this guide as a workflow tutorial, not as a promise that every button is visible on every account.
1. Start with the outcome, not a role
Open a new chat and describe the result you want. A useful first prompt has four parts: goal, context, constraints and output format. Example: “Turn these meeting notes into a decision log. Keep only confirmed decisions, list the owner and deadline, and put unresolved items in a separate section.”
2. Improve the answer with follow-up instructions
Do not restart from zero after the first answer. Point to the exact weakness: “The summary is too broad. Keep only items that change budget, scope or schedule.” Good AI use is iterative: ask, inspect, correct, then reuse the pattern.
3. Work with files as evidence
When file upload is available, attach the relevant document or spreadsheet and tell ChatGPT what to extract, compare or transform. Name the source of truth and ask for page, section or row references when possible. If the file does not contain the answer, instruct the model to say that instead of guessing.
4. Use images and screenshots for concrete questions
When image input is available, upload the screenshot or photo and ask a bounded question: identify an interface element, explain a chart, extract visible information, or compare two visual states. For important details, verify the result against the original image.
5. Use web search or Deep Research for current information
For a quick current question, use web-enabled search when available. For a larger research task, Deep Research can plan a multi-source investigation and return a structured result with sources. State the question, audience, date range, preferred source types and final format before starting. Review the cited sources rather than trusting the synthesis by itself.
6. Keep long-running work organized
Projects can keep related chats, files and instructions together when available on your account. Use one project for one durable objective—such as a research report, product launch or study topic—and place reusable instructions at the project level instead of repeating them in every chat.
7. Analyze structured data carefully
For a CSV or spreadsheet, define the metric before asking for conclusions. Ask ChatGPT to inspect columns, missing values and units first; then request the calculation or chart. For decisions involving money, compliance or operations, independently verify important calculations.
Goal: what final result do you need? Context: what should the model know? Constraints: what must it include, avoid or preserve? Evidence: what source should it rely on? Output: what exact format should it return? Verification: what should it flag as uncertain?
Uploading many files without defining the task; asking for “the best answer” without criteria; treating citations as proof without opening them; pasting secrets or sensitive credentials into a normal prompt; and assuming a feature is available because another user has it.
What to practice next
Use the same prompt on one real task three times. First run it as a vague request, then add context and constraints, then add a verification rule. Compare the outputs. The goal is to learn which instruction actually changes quality.
