Sidebar search finds content already in your ChatGPT account or current workspace; it is not web search. Available result types and connected sources can vary by account and device.
1. Search for a distinctive phrase
Use a rare phrase from the conversation, a project name, filename, client name or technical term. Exact memorable fragments usually work better than broad topics.
2. Filter by content type
Switch between All, Chats, Images, Documents, Projects or other filters when available. If a result disappears under a narrow filter, return to All.
3. Open the result and verify context
Do not assume the matching title is the right artifact. Open it and check the date, surrounding messages, project and file version before reusing the content.
4. Use Library for file management
When you need to browse, reuse, download or delete saved files, move from search to Library. Search is for discovery; Library is the management surface.
5. Know what search cannot recover
Archived chats can remain searchable, but deleted chats are not restored by search. If a connected source is missing, check account, workspace and connection permissions.
