Use Search when freshness matters. Web search is different from sidebar search: one finds current web information; the other finds content already in your ChatGPT account.
1. State the freshness requirement
Say exactly what must be current: “as of today,” “latest official price,” “current policy,” or a date range. This prevents an evergreen answer from being mistaken for current evidence.
2. Ask for search, not just an answer
Ask ChatGPT to search the web and prefer primary or official sources. For a comparison, specify the dimensions you need instead of asking for a generic “best” list.
3. Open the citations
Tap or open the sources behind important claims. Check the publication date, the organization, and whether the cited page actually supports the sentence beside it.
4. Separate facts from synthesis
Have ChatGPT label sourced facts, calculations, and interpretation separately. If two sources disagree, ask it to show the disagreement rather than averaging it away.
5. Recheck volatile facts
Prices, availability, software features, schedules, laws and breaking news can change quickly. Search again before acting when the fact is time-sensitive.
Search the web for the current answer. Prefer official or primary sources. For each important claim, give the source and date. Separate sourced facts from your interpretation, and flag any disagreement between sources.
Treating a citation icon as proof without opening it; mixing old and current sources; asking for “latest” without a date; relying on a search snippet when the underlying page says something narrower.
Finish check
You can explain which claims came from which current sources, which parts are interpretation, and what may have changed since those sources were published.
